WAUKESHA – The University of Wisconsin-Waukesha student Diversity Club and LGBTS (lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transvestite, straight) Pride Alliance will bring to campus representatives advocating both for and against a state constitutional amendment on marriage and civil union.
A debate, titled “The Constitutional Amendment Banning Civil Unions and Gay Marriages,” will pit Mike Tate from Fair Wisconsin arguing for a “no” vote against Julaine Appling of Vote Yes on Monday, October 2, at 7:00 p.m. in Northview Hall Room 133. The public is welcome and there is no charge.
Moderators include Chuck Quirmbach from Wisconsin Public Radio and Jeff Mayers from Wispolitics.com as well as unconfirmed individuals. The audience will not have an opportunity to pose questions during the hour-long debate.
The text of the proposed amendment reads:
“Only a marriage between one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as a marriage in this state. A legal status identical or substantially similar to that of marriage for unmarried individuals shall not be valid or recognized in this state.”
A referendum on the amendment will appear on the November 7 ballot.
