Artist Offers ‘Optical Delusion’

WAUKESHA – Waukesha artist Trevor Huskey plays with Frisbees and reality, creating work that challenges the gamesmanship of the viewer. He will exhibit his “Optical Delusion” in the University of Wisconsin-Waukesha Fine Arts Center Gallery from October 9 through November 11.

There will be an opening reception Friday, October 13, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. in the Gallery, located in the Fine Arts Center on campus at 1500 N. University Dr., Waukesha. The public is invited to come and meet the artist. He also will speak about his work on Wednesday, October 25, at 11:00 a.m. in Northview Room 055. Again, the public is welcome.

Gallery hours are 9:00-10:00 and 11:00-noon Mondays and Wednesdays; noon-1:00 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Fridays, and during special events, including performances of the fall theater production, Spinning into Butter, on Friday and Saturday evenings, November 3, 4, 10, and 11, and Sunday afternoon, November 5. To arrange for a private viewing at other times, phone the University Relations department at (262) 521-5445.

Huskey has packed “Optical Delusion” paintings and prints with visual angles and perspectives, leading the viewer to challenge his or her own grasp of reality. Originally he planned to toy with the coded messages in swear words, but the project evolved into using Braille, based on research he had done for the Peter Blum Gallery in New York, where he previously worked for five years.

For the past six years, he has been creating his “Optical Delusion,” conceiving, painting, and making prints. Eventually he expects to develop artist’s books from these as well.  In addition, he has other ongoing projects, including “Deke,” based on cracks in the wall of a Southwestern Bell building in Texas that appear almost hieroglyphic to him, and “Cull,” for which he uses discarded photographs and makes collages out of small, interesting details in the pictures.

Huskey holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Social Work degrees from the University of Texas-Austin and practices psychotherapy as well as art.

He has exhibited in Austin, Chicago, and New York City.  His work is included in the permanent collections of the McNay Art Museum, San Antonio, TX; the University of Texas-Austin; the University of Wisconsin-Madison; the Beinecke Rare Book Collection, Yale University; New York Public Library; Newark Public Library; and the Morgan Library, the Equitable Corporation, and Grolier Club, all in NYC.

UW-Waukesha has the largest enrollment among the 13 freshman-sophomore University of Wisconsin Colleges campuses. For information about programs, admission, or financial aid, contact the Student Services office at (262) 521-5040 or visit the Web at waukesha.uwc.edu.
