Stimpert, Madrigal Singers Perform Encore

WAUKESHA – The University of Wisconsin-Waukesha Madrigal Singers, who entertained sell-out crowds for nearly 30 years, will reunite for a concert on Saturday, November 18, in celebration of the campus’s 40th anniversary and headlining a community Festival of Trees.

Their august director, Donald Stimpert will come out of retirement to conduct the more than 60 former student singers, returning from the 1960s through the ‘90s, in a special performance. Digging back into their repertoire, they will present familiar carols, as well as some of their signature pieces, complete with trumpet fanfares. While many of the singers live in the area, others are coming from around the country.

Stimpert invited the singers back for the school’s 40th anniversary, and in his letter also noted that it is the 25th anniversary of the Madrigal Singers tour to England, where they performed in several cities. Coming from the University of Indiana, where Madrigals were a tradition, he initiated the annual holiday program in 1967 when he came to Waukesha. The program gained a dedicated following, and the concept soon spread to schools throughout Wisconsin.

UW-Waukesha has not presented the program since Stimpert retired in 1994.

The performance is just one feature of the Festival of Trees Holiday Party, to be held from 6:30 to 10 p.m. in the UW-Waukesha Commons. The evening will include an auction of decorated holiday trees and wreaths. An appetizer buffet and beverages, including the traditional old English Wassail Cup, will be served.

The evening kicks off of the Festival of Trees weekend celebration being organized by UW-Waukesha’s Foundation to raise funds for scholarships and is sponsored by Waukesha State Bank and M&I Bank.  Trees have been donated and decorated by local businesses and individuals.

Tickets at $35 each are available from the Foundation, 1500 University Drive, Waukesha 53188 or by contacting the Foundation at 262-446-3328.

UW-Waukesha has the largest enrollment among the 13 freshman-sophomore University of Wisconsin Colleges campuses. For information about programs, admission, or financial aid, contact the Student Services office at (262) 521-5040 or visit the Web at waukesha.uwc.edu.
