Selle Shows Oil, Watercolor Paintings, Carved Wood

WAUKESHA – Artist Thomas F. Selle will display some of his collected works in an exhibit titled “Man and Woman” at the University of Wisconsin-Waukesha’s Fine Arts Center Gallery November 13-December 15.

Located in the Fine Arts Center on campus at 1500 N. University Dr., the gallery is open 9:00-10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.-noon Mondays and Wednesdays; noon-1:00 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays; 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Fridays, and during special events. For admission to the gallery at another time, phone (262) 521-5445. Admission is free, and the public is invited.

The former chair and currently the director of internships for the Carroll College art department, Selle has been teaching art and professionally creating it for more than 30 years. He has worked in a variety of media and will be showing oil paintings, watercolors, and works in wood in this exhibit.

In addition to responding to his own creative urge, Selle seems to keep the viewer in mind. He imbues his oils with specific meanings, using words and images of people, and leaves clues to the moods, expressed with color, of his portrait-like characters. In his wood carving, he has taken an experimental tack. For example, he has carved a shoe to match one on display in a store, posing the question, “When is a shoe not a shoe?” and leaving the viewer to interpret them both as art. Finally, his watercolors incorporate letters and words, sending written messages through pieces of art and asking the viewer to decipher them.

Selle earned BS, MS, and MFA Degrees from UW-Milwaukee in the early 1970’s and has had his worked included in shows in a number of Wisconsin cities as well as in Indiana, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Oklahoma, and Chicago. He also has sat on juries to judge the work of other artists and has won several awards for his own work.

UW-Waukesha has the largest enrollment among the 13 freshman-sophomore University of Wisconsin Colleges campuses. For information about programs, admission, or financial aid, contact the Student Services office at (262) 521-5040 or visit the Web at waukesha.uwc.edu.
