MADISON –
Barbara Reinhart, Dousman, a studio artist and assistant
professor of art at the University of Wisconsin-Waukesha, is
displaying some wood-fired vessels, titled Canopic Jar Couple,” in
an exhibit at the Pyle Center in Madison. The show,
“INTERSECTIONALTIES: The Feminist in Art,” runs from March 21-April
21.
Highlighting the complexity of women’s
experiences as well as their contributions to the arts, the show
creates a forum for local and national artists to explore
connections between feminism, art, and their distinct lives and
struggles. Some 48 artists, predominantly Midwestern, responded to
the call for submissions, and their work represents many cross-issue
themes, such as those with race, ethnicity, nationality, class, age,
ability status, sexual orientation, and religious affiliation. They
employ diverse media as well – textiles, charcoal, encaustic,
photography, watercolor, pit-fired ceramics, beading, and even
everyday objects.
The Pyle Center, 702 Langdon Street, is open
from 7:30 am to 5:00 pm daily with additional viewing upon request
by calling (608) 262-1122. The exhibit extends throughout the AT&T
Lounge, Main Hallway, and Auditorium Gallery.
Adding to the exhibit, a feminist art
installation, in which artists will create a feminist domestic
space, will be displayed April 20-21 in Room 220 of the Pyle
Center.
This exhibit initiates a Midwestern connection
to the multi-year national Feminist Art Project
http://feministartproject.rutgers.edu/, which
aims to draw awareness to the impact of feminism on
contemporary art.
“INTERSECTIONALITIES”
coordinates with the UW System Women’s Studies
Consortium, which is sponsoring or co-sponsoring a number of April
events: The 31st annual statewide Wisconsin Women’s
Studies Conference, April 20-21; the 12th annual
Outstanding Women of Color in Education Awards, April 21; and the
second annual UW System LGBTQ Conference, April 21-22. Each offers
ideas about the theory and practice of Women’s and Gender Studies
teaching, scholarship, and activism, and provides visibility for
their work. This year these exchanges are extended to particularly
acknowledge the role of the visual arts in critical thinking and
cultural critique.
UW-Waukesha has the largest enrollment among
the 13 freshman-sophomore University of Wisconsin Colleges campuses.
