PED 211 - Physical Education for Elementary Schools

Chapter 10

Organizational details:

  1. Class size- normally the size of a grade school classroom, but sometimes they put two classes together
  2. Time- recommended 20 minutes- one hour/week Most common 150 minutes- 30 minutes each day
  3. Scheduling- when there is adequate staff, facilities and equipment, class schedules are easy to do. If not there may be classes combined.

Assistance

  1. Teaching assistance - aid
  2. Volunteer - parents, community
  3. Student assistance - high school kids

Health Policies- each child has medical exams on file in the office in case there are individual situations (diabetes, seizuring) that could be potential health problems

  • If a child is hurt in class we act in loco parentis - in place of the parent (accidents do happen)
  • Teachers must always be certified in first aid! CPR
  • Procedure in case of an injury
    1. Administer first aid
    2. Call parents
    3. Fill out an accident report - copies sent to administration

Student excuses- range from permanent waiver due to chronic health conditions to temporary waivers due to colds or other illnesses. The school nurse works within the policies set by the teacher and school.

Some teacher give academic work in place of exercise.

Dress-

  1. Up to 4th grade - just tennis shoes required
  2. 5th and 6th grade - change into PE clothes or school uniforms

Class Management

  1. How will you stop and start class?
  2. How do you take roll or put them into section places?
  3. Organizing facilities and equipment?
  4. How will equipment be returned?
  5. How many rules do you have? (see extra sheet)
  6. How will time be used before the lesson starts?
  7. How will you teach the lesson? (Keep it focused on task)

  • Choosing sides
  • The teacher always is held accountable for the welfare and safety of the children in his/her care
  • The teacher should select and teach only the things they feel competent to teach
  • You can be sued if found liable for injury (story- punctured liver)

Types of negligence

  1. Malfeasance- a teacher does something illegal and results in injury to the student (spanking)
  2. Misfeasance- the teacher does not perform his/her duties according to an established standard of conduct (teacher administering improper first aid or safety code violations)
  3. Nonfeasance- failing to perform a required act (the teacher know proper first aid but fails to perform it)
  4. Contributory and Comparative Negligence- failure of an injured party to exercise due to care for his own good and welfare
  5. Act of god- a child is injured by a fallen tree during class

Areas of Negligence

  1. Class instruction- make sure you follow the curriculum, use appropriate teaching methods, provide safety precautions, have class rules
  2. Supervision- you must be there
  3. Facilities and equipment- throw out old and potentially dangerous equipment, write memo's to principal if facility has something that needs to be repaired, stay inside on bad weather days
  4. Transportation- only use school buses or commercial vehicles and have permission slips
