PED 211 - Physical Education for Elementary Schools

Chapter 6

  • Motor skills are termed fundamental skills because they are the building blocks for more specialized sport, dance and gymnastic activities
  • These skills need to be learned so students can learn more advanced skills and movement patterns
  • Mature motor patterns are fully developed - does not relate to adult status. (Skill related, not age related.) Some adults can't do mature movement patterns in some fundamental motor skills (overhand throw). And if it's not in place by a certain age, it may never be acquired. So the elementary years are a crucial time for optimum development.

stopping-pg. 115

dodging-pg. 115-116

Non locomotor skills - these do not require transportation of the body through space or from place to place.

  1. swinging-pg. 116-117
  2. bend and stretch-pg. 117-118
  3. twist and turn-pg. 118-119
  4. push and pull-pg. 119-120 Manipulative skills

Involve control of objects, usually with the hands or feet.

  1. throwing - assessment - pg. 124
    1. 2 hand underhand
    2. 1 hand underhand
    3. 1 hand overhand
  • *Some adults poorly perform hand-eye coordination skills with an implement (tennis, badminton, baseball bat).
  • Most teachers have so many students that individual evaluation of specific motor skills is extremely difficult. The book contains checklists that teachers use to identify 3 levels of movement patterns: initial, elementary and mature.

Locomotor skills - basic motor skills necessary for moving through space - from place to place. We will look at 9 skills and emphasize things to stress and activities.
