PED 211 - Physical Education for Elementary Schools

Chapter 7

Health and wellness -the dynamic, ever changing process involved in achieving the highest level of health in a variety of key areas. Table 7.1, pg 141

The most common health problem-cardiovascular disease. The cause is often the lifestyle established early in life.

Health promotion- seeks to maintain or improve behaviors, attitudes, and values related to the development of a healthy lifestyle. Physical education plays a major role in this process.

Body systems...........different overhead.

Respiration- the absorption of oxygen that occurs in every living cell of the body, as well as releasing of energy, and eliminating carbon dioxide.

During exercise the demand for oxygen increases in the body tissues (muscle cells), which increases the supply of oxygen to the cells.

Steady state- term that means when enough oxygen can be supplied to the cells during exercise. (termed aerobic activity).

When exercise is to strenuous, the muscle cells don't get enough oxygen, energy is produced without oxygen (anaerobic activity- sprimti!t~g).

During anaerobic activity the cells build up an oxygen debt that must be paid back during recovery period.

Cardiovascular (aerobic) fitness is improved mainly through 20-3 0 minutes of jogging, biking, swimming, cross country skiing.

We will take pulses at the carotid artery.

Terms and facts

  1. resting heart rate- heart rate while sitting.
  2. maximum heart rate- 220-age, the highest rate you can work at.
  3. exercise heart rate- heart rate during activity. Table 7.2
  4. recovery heart rate- taking pulses after exercise. Usually if your heart rate returns to resting state quickly, it is an indication of good cardiovascular health---your oxygen debt is made up quickly.
  5. different activities make exercise heart rates vary (swimming is harder for some people than biking)
  6. Stress, fear, anger, and excitement all elevate heart rate.

Diet

50 essential nutrients in 6 food classes (table 7.6, pg. 148) provide foods for building and repairing body tissues, supplying energy, and regulating body processes.

Proper diet and exercise will use more body fat and improve muscle tone.

The best way to teach elementary students this is by implementing activities that allow them to investigate and relate information to their needs and lifestyles.

Page 149... good questions to ask elementary students about dieting.

Stress....we can teach children good stress management skills. We teach them:

  1. why it is bad for our health
  2. ways to cope positively
  3. identifying stressors

Substance abuse- the use and effects of alcohol, tobacco and illegal drugs. We teach:

  1. what they do to us
  2. how they affect us
  3. the potential for long term damage
