TUTORING at UW-Waukesha's Study Center
Two types of tutoring are offered:
Individual Tutoring:
Tutors help students understand basic course concepts, use better
methods of
study, and develop the necessary skills to improve in their classes.
For assistance, students may:
- Apply to work with a tutor on a regular basis.
- Make an appointment to see a tutor for a one-time session.
- Come in for walk-in help with short-term problems in math and
English.
- Students can get help with writing on-line as well by using
the Online Writing Lab (OWL.)
How to Apply for a Tutor:
You may schedule a single appointment for an English or math tutor
by asking at the front desk.
To meet with a tutor on a regular weekly basis, request an application
at the front desk of the Study Center, Westview Hall 100.
- If there is a tutor available for your subject, the coordinator
will help you contact the tutor to schedule
your appointments.
- If no tutor is currently available, the coordinator will try
to locate one for you.
Group Study:
Trained student leaders guide structured study groups for courses
such as chemistry, history, math, and
psychology. Usually the groups are formed during the second week
of school with the times and locations of study groups announced
in the participating classes and posted on the bulletin board outside
of the Study Center. Structured Study Group emphasizes mastery of
the concepts found in high risk courses using group problem-solving
skills. Students who utilize Structured Study Group tend to earn
at least a half a grade higher than those who do not attend.
To sign up:
Simply show up when the study group meets. The topic for each session
will be different
How to Become a Tutor or Group Study Leader:
Students wishing to become tutors or group study leaders should
seek their professor's recommendation, complete a tutor
application, and attend a training session prior to the semester
they wish to tutor.
Students who have questions about becoming a tutor or group study
leader may contact the Study Center by calling (262) 521-5476.
