Counseling Services
UW-Waukesha offers free and confidential personal counseling
on campus for currently enrolled students. A college
education offers many opportunities; it also comes with its
shares of stress. You may be experiencing stress due to an
over-booked schedule, personal relationship struggles, emotional
or physical illness, drug or alcohol abuse, or financial
worries. It is easy to become distracted from your school
work with these concerns.
Short term counseling (four - six sessions) is available to
help students find solutions to their concerns or to simply have
someone listen.
Common Concerns:
- Academic Concerns
- Depression
- Anxiety/Stress
- Time Management
- Alcohol/Drug Abuse
- Grief and Loss
- Financial Stress
- Relationship Struggles
- Sexuality
- Eating Disorders
- Referrals to local mental health professionals
Staff:
Amy Walker is a counselor at UW-Waukesha. She graduated
from UW-Eau Claire in 1999 with a bachelor's degree in art and a
minor in psychology. She earned a master's degree in
Guidance and Counseling with an emphasis in mental health
counseling at UW-Stout. Amy has worked with college
students since 2003 in education, counseling, and crisis
prevention capacities. She is currently working towards
her 3,000 post-graduate hours to receive her Licensed
Professional Counselor (LPC) licensure.
Scheduling an Appointment:
If you would like to schedule an appointment, you may do so
by stopping by the Study Center, calling 262-521-5491, or
emailing amy.walker@uwc.edu.
Appointments are generally fifty minutes in length.
Appointments are available Monday - Wednesday 9:00am-4:00pm and
Thursday 9:00am-12:00pm during the Fall and Spring semesters.
During academic breaks and Summer session, appointments are
available on a limited basis.
Privacy:
Respecting students' privacy is of the utmost importance.
Confidentiality is strictly maintained under the guidelines of
professional ethics. Students' counseling files are held
separately from academic and conduct files. Upon the
student's request, a release of information form must be signed
in order for information to be shared with outside parties.
Confidentiality may be broken in cases where a student is likely
to harm him/herself or another person.
What is Counseling Like?
Usually a first time counseling session involves the student
giving the counselor a bit of background information and talking
about what led them to schedule an appointment. The
student and counselor will work together to frame a short list
of goals the student would like to accomplish while attending
counseling. Finally, there will be an opportunity for the
student to schedule another appointment if they are interested.
If the counselor determines that it would be in the student's
best interest to work with someone with specialized training,
the student will be given referral resources.
Free Mental Health Screening Tool
The UW Colleges counseling staff welcomes you to take the on-line screening for alcohol, anxiety, bipolar disorder, depression, eating disorders, and post traumatic stress. This free screening is part of the National Screening for Mental Health. It is available to all UW-College students and is taken anonymously. No one will know you have taken the screening unless you choose to share this information.
The screening is provided so you may find out--in a few minutes--whether or not a consultation with a counselor would be helpful. Referral information will be provided at the end of the screening process.
