Women's Basketball History

Jack Hervert's PhotCoach History Jack Hervert has 425 career coaching victories. UW-Waukesha Women's Basketball has won 14 Wisconsin Collegiate Conference championships (1993-1995, 1997-2007), 7 Wisconsin Junior College Athletic Association State Championships (1993,1994,1995, 2000,2002, 2005, 2007), and 3 runner up titles (1998, 2001, 2006) in 13 state tournament appearances. He has been named Wisconsin Junior College Athletic Association Coach of the Year 7 times, and Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Coach of the Year three times (1998, 2002, 2004). He has been an Executive Board member of the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association since 1999 and was named to the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame Committee. During his coaching career, Hervert has also won a divisional conference volleyball title (2002), and 2 conference championships as Head Girls Track Coach at Franklin High School (1993,2000). This is his 23rd year as a head basketball coach.

-1991 In his first year in charge, Hervert has to recruit players at midseason and still leads UW-Waukesha to a winning record(11-10). Tricia Zeman was named the all conference and all state teams, and set the school record for rebounds in one season.

-1992 Still adjusting to the college level, the team goes 11-11 with the cast of freshmen playing big roles. Anji Allen was named to the first team all conference and all state team.

-1993 Breakthrough season No.1 earns a 22-6 mark and the first conference championship in school history. Anji Allen was named the conference player of the year. Sarah Kuenzli was voted to the all conference team with Allen, while Shannon Herman and Lisa Seiser were named honorable mention. Allen and Jacinda Wisniewski were named to the state tournament all tourney team.

-1994 Repeated Conference and State Title with a 18-6 record. Angie Gorenc was named league MVP, while Shannon Herman and Stacy Schoonover were named to the all conference and all state tournament team.

-1995 An undefeated 26-0 run, the first for a school in the UW System. Once again taking the Conference and the State Title. Angie Gorenc became the school's all time leading scorer and rebounder while Sally Cianciolo set a record for most points scored in one season (531). All 5 starters (Angie Kielpinski, Stacy Schoonover, and Tracey Kochanski) averaged in double figures as this cougar team won every game by at least a margin of 10 points.

-1996 The brilliant run slows down with an entirely new cast of players. Still, at 11-10 the winning string hits four. Charity Goss and Megan Harvey were named to the all conference team. Goss set a record for most rebounds in one game (21).

-1997 Aided by a tournament trip to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., UW-Waukesha won 11 of its last 12 games and finished 17-7 with a Conference Championship. Charity Goss was named to the all conference team and led the league in rebounding.

-1998 The most dynamic lineup-three starting guards averaged a combined 60 points a game and anchor a 22-5 team that won a fifth conference title. Amanda Jorgenson was named player of the year, and along with Regina Burns and Nicole Cira made first team all conference. Jorgenson and Burns were named first team all state, while Cira was named to the second team.

-1999 The Cougars won their sixth conference title in seven years and advanced to the state championship game, finishing 21-8. Their victory in the state semi final was Coach Hervert's 200th career win. Michelle Reynolds became the first player in school history to score 450 points and collect 200 rebounds.

-2000 The school's fourth state championship and seventh conference title, finishing 27-4. This team was highlighted by Michelle Reynolds becoming the school's all time leading scorer (874), leading free throw shooter, and leading FG scorer (374). Alyssa Krueger had a rebounding record for one season (310), and Caterricka Harris set a school record for 3-pointers and for finishing fourth on the all time scoring list (617).

-2001 This 26-5 cougar squad was characterized by two different teams. The first semester featured 4 returning starters (Nicky Carroll...the all time school's assist leader, Shelly Flanagan....the school' s all time leader free throw shooter in attempts and makes, Kelly Maltby, and Regina Burns) who continued the press and run style that won a state title in 2000. After Burns and Maltby's 2 year eligibility was completed, the team turned more to it's defense (set a record for lowest scoring average allowed in conference) and ran away with the conference, and continued until losing in the state championship game. Freshmen Annmarie Gigowski, Alissa Schmidt, Angela Scherrer, and Angela Palesse helped continue the cougar dominance. Flanagan became only the sixth player to score over 600 points, Schmidt set a school blocks record, and along with Carroll had a triple triple (3 digits in 3 different categories, the first time 2 players have achieved that in one season), and Coach Jack Hervert won his 250th game. It was the 4th consecutive 20 win season for UW-Waukesha.

-02 A ninth conference title and fifth state championship: led by state player of the year Amy Kujawa, and Susie Deprey, the cougars finished the year 30-1 with a season ending 20 game winning streak. Team records were set in 3 point baskets (92), single game rebounding totals, team assists in one game, and largest average conference point differential (35). Amy Kujawa had 267 rebounds, third highest in school history for one season, and Angela Palesse finished with 55 career three point baskets, second all time in team history.

-03 A crew of primarily freshmen (outside of sophomore Melissa Janicki) won the 10th conference championship in 11 years and finished 25-5 overall, with only one state loss (state tournament semi-final). Amanda Ireland was named to first team all state and all conference, statistically going for the fifth triple triple in school history (points, assists, steals). Lisa Voelkel was first team all state and second team all conference. She was the first player in school history to record three digits in four categories (points, assists, rebounds, steals). Katie Pingle and Rebecca Ligman were the team rebound leaders, with Ligman attempting 120 free throws, and Pingle finished among the all time leaders in blocked shots for one season.

-2004: The school's 11th conference champion(26-3) was led by player of the year Amanda Ireland, who finished her career 2nd all time in points (803), and assists (254), and Lisa Voelkel, who for the second year finished in double figures in 4 categories. Lisa is now the career steals leader in UW-W history (205). Kristin Mlachnik and Anna Mueller (who set school records in FG %, and 3 point FG%, as well as assists for one season) were named to the second team, with Mlachnik also being named all state. Katie Pingle finished 7th all time in career rebounds (309), and is the all time leader in blocked shots. The team set school records for total 3 point baskets and steals for one season, and was the fourth team to surpass 1000 rebounds.

-2005: A balanced team with outstanding chemistry that won the school's 6th state championship, setting records in team assists and steals. Anna Mueller (the school's 6th player of the year) set records in assists for a season (192), career (338), career 3 pt FG % (43), and finished 2nd all time in steals (175). Kristin Mlachnik set a record in 3 pt FG's made (82) and finished 2nd in career scoring (841). Dawn LaBonte was the first 5 spot player since Michelle Reynolds and was named first team all conference and all state tournament team. Tasha Smith cracked the 200 rebound mark for a season, and finished as the team leader in steals (95). Jill Crane totaled over 150 assists and steals for her career. 5 players (Mueller, Mlachnik, LaBonte, Smith, and Angie Wiesmueller) all scored over 200 points this season.

-06: A 30-2 overall record, 10-0 in conference play, 25 straight wins, 41 consecutive home wins, 80 consecutive conference wins, and 9 straight state tournament appearances highlight this group's accomplishments. Dawn LaBonte was named WCC conference player of the year and first team all state while setting school records in shot attempts, points in one single game, (36) and minutes played, as well as finishing fourth all time in career scoring. She was considered only the second 5 spot player in school history (the other being Michelle Reynolds: 1998-2000). Natasha Smith was named first team all conference and set school records in career rebounds (545), and rebounds in one season (322). She also is second all time in steals (186). Kira Flack was named honorable mention all conference while setting a school record in steals in one season (125). Katie Fitzgerald collected close to 400 rebounds, placing her third on the career list. In what would be considered one of the greatest weeks in the history of the program, the cougars defeated two division II teams from Ohio, and two division I teams from Florida, while in the process had the first undefeated month of January since 1995.

-07: Speed, shooting and trapping defenses highlight this perfect 31-0 season. The home winning streak reaches 58 games, the conference winning streak is now at 92 consecutive wins, and the conference titles streak is at 11 years. Kira Flack was named first team all conference and all state, finishing as the all time steals leader and 5th in career scoring. Kim Bentfield also was a first team all conference and all state member, finishing 7th in career scoring and 2nd in career assists. Rachel Statis was the team’s third leading scorer and led in rebounds with 199. Annie Werner was the team leader in assists while averaging 9 points per game. The highlight of this season was the Surf and Slam title in San Diego (Kim Bentfield, Annie Werner, and Rachel Statis were named to the all tourney team), and the school’s 7th WJCAA state championship (Bentfield and Flack were named to the all tournament team). Statistically this is the most dominating team in school history.
